That Old Familiar
"That Old Familiar" is a solo CD from California acoustic artist, David Thom. David teamed up with Grammy-winner Laurie Lewis (producer) to record this CD between May and August of 2011. The CD ranges from driving bluegrass to tender country ballads, and features some of California's most talented players on today's acoustic scene. Mike Witcher (Peter Rowan Band), Chad Manning (David Grisman Bluegrass Experience and Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands), Paul Shelasky (Lost Highway, David Thom Band), Tom Rozum (Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands), banjo master Bill Evans, and Laurie herself, to name a few. The CD features songs from lesser known writers like Dave Alvin and Emma Smith, original songs from David, classic bluegrass and even a cover of the classic "Lucille" of Kenny Rogers fame. A wonderful mosaic of Americana and bluegrass that flows together like it's one long, sweet song.
In addition to fronting his own traditional-style bluegrass band for the past 15 years, the David Thom Band, David was the lead guitarist and singer for the David Grisman Bluegrass experience for two years. He is a mandolin player for Grateful Bluegrass Boys, a member of Vintage Grass, a writer for Bluegrass Today, and an accomplished songwriter.
A collection of stellar Americana and bluegrass songs from former Grisman guitarist David Thom, of the David Thom Band. Notable guests include Laurie Lewis, Todd Phillips and Paul Shelasky.
